This painting includes a 12 x 12 in. (30.48 x 30.48 cm) acid-free 4 ply (1/16 in) mat board in cream linen with 6.5 x 6.5 in. (16.51 x 16.51 cm) circle cutout and 45-degree white core beveled edge, a 12 x 12 in. clear acrylic pane (3/32 in. depth) with non-glare glazing and OP-3 UV filtering, a 1 1/8 in. (2.857 cm) profile wood frame in distressed gold with ornate lip, a 12 x 12 in. opening and overall dimensions of 13 7/8 x 13 7/8 x 15/16 in (35.24 x 35.24 x 2.38 cm).

Created during a period of experimentation with water-based stains, this work features the same dreamy blue and green tones typical of the artist’s small works on paper. The subject was inspired by a surprise encounter with a small grass snake in the artist’s kitchen.

Imagining the snake as a brass instrument, the artist connected the form to the musical traditions of New Orleans. The use of liquid brass reinforces this idea, adding a metallic shimmer to the bell like heads of the three snakes. Brass Snake Trio (2023) was followed by a companion piece, Brass Snake Solo (2023), painted on the day the snake was safely captured and released.
